Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is a type of trauma processing therapy that uses Dual Attention Stimulus (DAS) or Bilateral Stimulation to reprocess traumatic experiences through free association of one’s emotions, thoughts and sensations. This therapeutic model is derived from the Standard Protocol created by Francine Shapiro, and adopted by EMDRIA, this treatment modalities governing board.
Therapists must be trained via an EMDRIA approved course to utilize EMDR Therapy with clients. Please check your individual therapist biography to determine if they are trained. Therapeutically, EMDR is utilized as a treatment tool with clients to process traumatic experiences and resolve internalized messaging. Dual Attention Stimulus/Bilateral Stimulation is provided via Eye Movement, Alternating Sound, Tapping, or other appropriate methods. The combination of targeting core messages about self, in conjunction with identified memories supporting the installation of that message while applying the DAS helps the brain naturally evaluate, assess, current negative thought patterns and reprocess them into more adaptive supporting neural pathways.
This type of therapy is different from talk therapy modalities. In a typical EMDR session, a therapist is mindful of not inserting themselves into processing allowing the client to freely navigate their thoughts. The dual attention stimulus works to engage various parts of the brain to support processing, while the therapist is trained to read verbal and nonverbal cues to assist with navigating through the entire protocol and ensure client emotional safety. Often, these sessions lack the discussion that is noticeably present in traditional treatment practices.
When targeted life themes and memories are fully processed the client will likely present more desensitized to the experience with a new thought installation that brings feelings of understanding, relief, or peace.
Typically EMDR is performed in an in-person office setting, however, the COVID-19 Pandemic forced clinician’s in the field to determine safe long distance virtual methods to continue their EMDR progress with clients. Seeking a solution, clinicians and tech support worked together to create online DAS methods which can be utilized through visual, sound, or tactile senses.
EMDR therapy online platforms typically consist of a few options for DAS stimulus including visually following a moving shape on screen, using headphones to listen to alternating left to right sounds, and/or tappers, available at cost, that plug into your device controlled by the clinicians control panel. Additionally, if none of those methods are doable in the environment, or comfortable for the client, the clinician and client can discuss other options collaboratively in session.
